Cultural Practitioner, Basketry

Ireka is a cultural practitioner whose involvement in the arts and crafts spans over thirty five years. She specialises in basketry but explores organic sculptures, painting and print making. Over the years she has worked independently and with community and governmental organisations as a coordinator, promotor, teacher and consultant for many art and craft markets, exhibitions and cultural events.

Ireka won a commonwealth scholarship that enabled her to travel to Ghana where she studied various aspects of visual arts and craft at the College of Art, University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

She earned an AA Fine Arts and a BFA from the Barbados Community Collage; and a MA Cultural Studies from the University of the West Indies.
Some of her fine crafts include an array of 'Royal Vessels' (artistic baskets) that have won awards at Caribbean Gift and Craft show, NIFCA and Crop Over Visual Art Exhibitions.
